- Description
- In 1928, the Democrats nominated Al Smith, governor of New York, and Joseph Robinson, senator from Arkansas, for president and vice president. Smith, the first Roman Catholic candidate for president, suffered a landslide defeat to Republican Herbert Hoover and his running mate Charles Curtis. Curtis was the first candidate on a winning national ticket to identify as Native American.
