- This painted handmade paper sheet features bright yellow, orange, pink, red, green, and blue colors blended together. The handmade paper was formed by dipping a screen into a vat of paper pulp in water and allowing the web of pulp to dry into a sheet. This process resulted in the paper’s textural surface and deckle edges, features that are emphasized by the acrylic paint layer. The work, donated by artist David Driskell, was made to be handled by students and researchers to discover evidence of how it was made through an exploration of the sheet’s texture and paint layers. The paper is painted with white markings suggestive of a symbol-based writing system. Juxtaposing the colorful background with the white markings encourages a critical examination of how colors and symbols communicate ideas and feelings.
- This work is the result of programming at the Anacostia Community Museum that connected prominent local artists, including Sam Gilliam, David Driskell, and Alma Thomas, with the local community.
