Square Rim Bowl
Object Details
- Artist
- Jack Straka, born Mahanoy City, PA 1934
- Luce Center Label
- Jack Straka only uses woods native to Hawaii, and he has turned more than fifty different types including koa, mango, and Norfolk pine. He favors koa wood and harvests most of his material from the windblown trees and stumps on the slopes of Mauna Loa (Long Mountain). Square Rim Bowl was inspired by a type of Japanese dish used to serve sashimi. It was turned from koa, and the broad rim and gentle curves highlight the ribbon-like stripes of deep red and gold grain.
- Luce Object Quote
- "Even though I turn the same basic shapes, since the wood varies so much, the way the differing grain shows up makes every one different." Jack Straka, 1996
