- As a U.S. Navy pilot during the Vietnam War, John McCain was shot down while on a bombing mission over Hanoi in October 1967. McCain was grievously injured when he ejected from his plane and was captured immediately. A POW for more than five years, he was held in the “Hanoi Hilton,” a notorious North Vietnamese prison. There he endured continuous torture and beatings. The son of a noted admiral, McCain rejected his captors’ offers to release him ahead of men who had been imprisoned longer. Finally freed in March 1973, he was welcomed home as a hero two months after the Paris peace accords ended the Vietnam War.
- McCain retired from the Navy in 1981. He entered politics by winning a seat in Congress in 1982 and was elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona in 1986. Having lost the 2008 presidential election to Barack Obama, he remained a senator until his death.
