- Provenance
- Postcards were compiled by Smithsonian Horticulture Services Division staff as part of a general reference collection. Most were purchased at yard sales or antique stores in the 1980s. Additional postcards were added to the collection in 2014 and 2022 thanks to donations made to the Archives of American Gardens.

- Summary
- The Historic Gardens Postcard Collection includes over 500 postcards of historic views of various public gardens, parks, monuments, and buildings throughout the United States as well as Europe, Canada, Mexico and elsewhere. Some private gardens and estates and several sites in Washington, D.C. are also represented. Roughly half of the postcards were mailed; the remaining postcards were not written on or posted. Areas represented include Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. About a dozen cards feature various views of Smithsonian Institution museums along the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
