- This Nevada Centennial Issue stamp commemorates the 100th anniversary of the first settlement of the current state of Nevada. The United States gained control of the territory following the Mexican-American War. The Carson River Valley, depicted on the stamp, was first settled by Mormon settlers, as a way-station post for westward travelers.
