- The Postal Service issued a 37-cent Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge commemorative stamp in a pressure-sensitive adhesive pane of twenty on March 14, 2003, in Sebastian, Florida. The stamp, designed by Carl T. Herrman and photographed by James Brandt, Davis, California, went on sale nationwide March 15, 2003.
- This stamp commemorates the centennial of the creation of Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, which also marks the beginning of the National Wildlife Refuge system. Pelican Island is located in the Indian River Lagoon, on the east coast of central Florida. Established on March 14, 1903, by executive order of President Theodore Roosevelt, Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge was the first official wildlife refuge in the United States. Today, in addition to the five acres of Pelican Island, the refuge also encompasses 5,413 acres, consisting largely of submerged lands, mangrove islands, marshes, and maritime hammocks (raised, fertile areas usually occupied by hardwood vegetation).
- The stamp was printed in offset process, Microprint "USPS". The Banknote Corporation of America, Inc., printed 55 million stamps.
