Cooper-Hewitt's collections of design and decorative arts represent many cultures, ancient and modern. Included in this exhibition are textiles, drawings, prints, wallpaper, metalwork, woodwork, furniture, ceramics and glass as well as a 25,000 volume library.

This inaugural exhibition's aim is to provide fresh insight into the causes and effects of design. It was created by an international team of artists, architects and designers headed by Hans Hollein and funded by Johnson Wax.

Among the exhibits which have received publicity are the Angel Cage in Arata Isozaki's Gravity Room; the plexiglass Sacred Room by Nader Ardalan and Karl Schlamminger; Peter Bode's Pick A Handle and Hans Hollein's loaves of bread, hammers, and stars.
